Secret 7: Sad Lobster
I chose secret seven as one of my smaller briefs, opting to make 3 album sleeves. These were all made over a time period of a week and a half.
I listened to all the tracks, my first thoughts were to create an album sleeve for three songs but after listening to the tracks I was really drawn to Tame Impala's 'The Less I Know The Better'.
I started thinking about time with the lyrics 'it's not now or never, wait ten years we'll be together' and who has the time to wait that long. Originally I started off with moths and butterflies, thinking that they don't have long life spans and that for them, a day is a lifetime. I spent most the time listening to that song in my spare time and I decided to look at other animals with strange lifespans. I thought about drawing Elephants because they have long memories. Eventually I landed on lobsters, they have the potential to live for a long amount of time (until they caught or eaten they pretty much keep growing and don't die) and some how connected to the idea of a lobster waiting forever.
I drew the basic dimensions, and most of it was done in acrylic and some parts in gouache. I didn't but any type in straight away because I wasn't sure it was necessary.
I had a go at implementing some type in, but it felt a little weird (kind of collage-y kind of not) so in the end I took out a tablet and drew my type onto it.
I manipulated the original image by adding two layers of colours over the top, one yellow for saturation (which made it very bright) and one blue (which brought out the texture side to it). I did this because the song is so strange and lively even though it's about something quite sad, I wanted that to carry across.
I submitted and although I didn't win I really enjoyed the thought process that went into it.
