Studio Brief 1 - "initially" -first ideas

First initial ideas for the A-Z poster brief

I worked mostly in pencil for the ideas, the first idea I had was Star Wars. I chose A (Amidala) and B (binks) to bulk out in ink, the week before this I had been introduced to ink and I was really enjoying experimenting and it carried through into this brief.
I tried 2 different techniques, using the ink in a neat way to add detail and using ink to tone the work. I kept it to red mostly because queen Amidala was in red in the movie and I wanted to see how it'd work as a theme. After I experimented I went on to design the characters with less detail so more time went into other ideas.

2. Cakes
This was a pretty basic idea to start with, a lot of the letters I knew but the further down the alphabet I got stuck and had to look online for recipes to make cakes with exotic names. I also didn't know what a lot of cakes looked like which involved me having to research for these cakes and then draw from those images. I knew from the start that I wanted to watercolour them and practiced doing this to the cakes I liked the best. If I could have, I would have gone round and taken photos from cakes in bakery's (as I rung in to see if most places made the cakes before remembering the specification of the brief) but as the brief specified it had to be hand made. With this restriction in mind, I changed a lot of initial approaches I might have gone for like paper cutting or collage as it would be too time consuming and might not look as good or be as effective as something simpler.

3. Drinks

Again this was a really simple idea and as I work on a bar I've seen most of these drinks up close, I think because of this reason i decided to ink up some of them rather than watercolour them (as I already knew what colours they were I wanted to see how they all worked in a different medium). I chose teal ink because I thought it showed the idea of water and liquid better than black or red.

4. Bruce Willis Movies

This is one of the ones I decided not to ink or colour up one of the stamps, this was because I was really unsure of the idea and wanted to wait for the crit before making any mock ups. I liked the idea but it was hard to get the whole alphabet in and some of them I had to use quotes from the films instead of the title. I also didn't know if it was obvious enough.

5. Sweets

This was another really simple idea, I didn't colour in any stamps because I wasn't really sure I would make it I just thought it had possibilities as a poster and that there could be some nice graphical elements that could be put in. I also thought that a lot of them could work well in black and white.

6. Superpowers and 7. Heroes

Neither of these worked out the way I hoped they would once I put them down on paper. Superpowers was too hard to understand as a concept without a line of text underneath (there was meant to be no text on the posters as part of the briefs) and it felt too detailed to understand. Heroes I found were too hard to recognise unless you see a die hard comic junkie, with some of them coming from more unconventional comics I think people would have a hard time understanding them and a even harder time trying to understand what the poster was about.

8. Lara Croft doing normal things

This idea stemmed from the heroes poster idea, I drew Lara croft and was having a conversation about how funny it would be to see her doing something that wasn't kicking ass. From this I developed the ideas for a poster where she was doing a range of interesting normal people things. I really liked his idea but didn't develop it any further until I had had my crit with the group to see whether it was as interesting as I found it.

9. Leonardo do Caprio -ism

I really like Leonardo di Caprio so it only made sense to me to design a poster with facts about Leonardo di Caprio. It wasn't the most practical of poster designs but I thought it was an interesting idea to choose one person and show details of their life. I thought Leonardo was a good choice as he's a fairly popular actor and most people would understand the stamps.

10. Clothing  items

This one was a good idea but it was very simple and not very innovative. I thought it would be nice to pick something simple and embellish it. Plus I thought I could add in some humour with the manikini and characters posing.
