FMP: artist research Emily Carroll

Teresa put me on to Emily Carroll after our tutorial together, Emily Carroll has a really interesting practice when it comes to illustration and it's one that id like to replicate. she creates comics but also does spot illustration for editorial too, having both of them really pushes the other one. I can't believe I've never spotted her work before because it's actually the kind of thing I'm into! I love the mixed media between digital and hand drawn elements!
After Teresa showed me some work I went straight out to buy her book! It won a prize last year and it's actually very similar to my fmp in the fact that it's a short collection of stories that all share that same running theme (the woods). With mine it would be that every character has fallen asleep in the real world and woken up in the same parallel world (but with the storyline being continuous it would just been the main character was swapped).

Online, Emily Carroll has a wonderful website and practice. It's a very ordered blog but it's more than just a portfolio. She has a collection of her online comics there which are all available to read online, they are all spectacular and well thought out in terms of their composition too.

With 'The Prince & The Sea' you click on each image to reveal a new panel, I have no idea how she's got her website to work like this but it's amazing.

Each panel is really well considered. Another thing I like about Emily Carroll is her use of text within her images, handwritten text adds to the image rather than taking away.

She also does spot illustration for editorial which is equally as considered.

Her comics and illustrations are all set out in different ways and shes definitely a practicioner I will be keeping my eyes on in the future! I would love for my FMP to be the beginning of a similar practice, painted comics but carried across onto a digital format. I think I might have to do some investigating with regards to the design of the website but it would be well worth the investment.
