FMP: Digital vs Gouache

Before my tutorial with Teresa, I got together a few different ways of working to see which works best so I could ask her about how to proceed. I've tried digital a few times, Amy suggested going back to gouache. Even though YCN wasn't a success, the process I used was very fun and very vivid.

These are my initial sketchbook drafts for the storyboard, I took these into photoshop because they
are most likely going to be the compositions I use for the actual comic! I went over it with a pencil brush in photoshop, first just line work and then I coloured it in.

After I did this, I actually realised I wasnt fond of it at all. I want to make something i'd want to read and nothing about how I was drawing felt invested if that makes sense?
I turned to gouache and was far more pleased with the outcome, although it might take longer it feels more individual. Also I know that gouache is really good to edit with in photoshop.

After speaking to Teresa, I've decided definitely to stick with the gouache. She said to stick with what I was best at (which admittedly I havent worked with gouache all that much) so I don't have to learn a whole new medium. However I feel that the images come together much easier by hand painting than using photoshop. I was also told off for drawing "potatoe" noses, I hadn't really noticed I was doing it (its not how I normally draw them) but it drew my attention to how I was taking things I liked from other artists and applying it to my work. In some cases, this isn't a bad thing. Having the likes of Tom Haugomat on my instagram feed has only made me consider colour more in my work, but having artists like Lize medding (sad ghost club) has definitely started to rub off on me and I need it not too! Teresa warned of how going with something that is popular now will wear off and it will detract from my work.
